How to calculate the volume of epoxy resin for the mold?
Calculating the right amount of resin is a crucial step before you start filling your mold. This ensures you use the correct volume of resin without overspending or wasting any.
ATTENTION! Each resin has its own mixing ratio, so be sure to check this carefully!
For example, our transparent resins usually have a proportion of 100:50.
So, let’s dive into the math and calculate the required volume of resin for these two proportions, using model No. 100 Silicone mold with leaves for a tray as an example.
First, note that you need to focus on the internal dimensions of the mold, which can be easily measured using a ruler! Internal dimensions: 21.5 cm (about 8.46 in) x 21.5 cm (about 8.46 in)
Casting height: up to 8 mm (about 0.31 in)
Calculation for the 100:50 proportion
Let’s calculate the required volume of resin for components A and B for the selected mold at the 100:50 ratio, which should be used with transparent resins like CraftArtResin GEODE (Viscous), CraftArtResin, Craft Crystal Resin, and ResinArt for beginner artists. Using the formula (length x width x depth of the mold):
(21.5 cm x 21.5 cm) x 0.8 cm = 369.8 grams (about 13.04 oz).
Given the 100:50 ratio (2:1), we divide 369.8 grams into 3 parts = 123.3 grams. Multiply this value by the ratio 2:1 to get:

Component A: 123.3 g x 2 = 246.5 g (about 8.7 oz)

Component B: 123.3 g x 1 = 123.3 g (about 4. 35 oz)
After the product has hardened, sometimes it’s a good idea to coat it in the protective layer of Hard Resin to prevent it from damage. The proportions for the coating after mixing both components are 100:50, the same as for the transparent resins.
Using the formula (length x width of the product) x 0.15 (since we are covering only the front part with a 1.5 mm layer):
21.5 cm x 21.5 cm x 0.15 = 69.3 grams.
Next, divide 69.3 grams into 9 parts (5+4=9 parts) = 7.7 grams per part. For the 5:4 ratio, we get: - Component A: 7.7 g x 5 = 38.5 g (about 1.36 oz)

Calculations for the proportion of 100:33
For clarity, let’s take the same mold, with known internal parameters. Using the same formula (length * width * depth of the mold) we get: (21.5 cm * 21.5 cm) * 0.8 cm (about 0.31 in) = 369.8 grams (about 13.04 oz).
According to the proportions of the resin (100 parts of component A and 33 parts of component B, i.e., 3.3:1), we divide 369.8 grams (about 13.04 oz) into 3.3 + 1 = 4.3 parts.
This means:
369.8 grams / 4.3 = 86 grams.
We then multiply this value by the ratio 3.3:1, resulting in:
- Component A: 86 g x 3.3 = 283.8 g

Component B: 86 g x 1 = 86 g
If you want to pour several molds at once, simply add the required amount of resin to each mold and use the same proportions to figure out the total amount for mixing components A and B.
